Older Guy Style, Harrington Jackets & One Sharp Barber

Plus, would you rather be unhappy or uncertain?

by Brock McGoff

Hello again! I hope your week is going well so far.

In today's email:

  • Style for older guys
  • A classic fall jacket
  • Unhappiness vs. uncertainty
  • Some snacks and #inspo

Let's dive in πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ§”πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ Men Over 40

Last week, I published a video about style and grooming mistakes men over 40 make.

I made a similar video 5 years ago, but this new one is very different.

Why'd I change my opinions and advice? Two reasons:

First... I'm older now. I'm a 40 year old dad, not a mid-30s guy with no kids living in NYC.

Second... Menswear, and fashion in general, has changed a LOT in the past 5 years.

Before, I tried teaching older guys about "rules" – what to wear, what not to wear.

Now, I'm focused on authenticity and feeling, without totally ignoring dress codes.

If you haven't seen the video yet, you can watch it right here:

If you're short on time, here are the key takeaways:

  1. Dressing up β‰  Dressing well --> Formality and style used to be tightly correlated, but not anymore
  2. Avoid a "Real men don't ___" mentality --> This is a trap; caring about appearance doesn't make you feminine, it makes you an adult
  3. Forget the "rules" --> Yes, you're allowed to wear graphic tees and sneakers in your 40s, 50s and beyond
  4. Evolve --> Slim fit everything isn't as timeless as we thought; try looser fits, you might love them!
  5. Don't give up --> Being busy isn't an excuse to go full Tommy Bahama dad bod; keep trying new brands and style, don't be afraid to test out trends

πŸ§₯ A Classic Jacket

For my money, nothing really beats a Harrington jacket for those crisp early fall days.

I prefer traditional details, like raglan sleeve construction and reverse flap pockets.

But even a simple version or more modern take will serve you well.

Here are some good options:

  1. J.Crew Cotton Twill "Harrington" - the minimalist
  2. Baracuta G9 - the classic
  3. Flint & Tinder Waxed Harrington - the rugged
  4. Bonobos Harrington Jacket - the (more) affordable classic
  5. Everlane Filled Harrington - the warmer option
  6. L.L.Bean Warm Up Jacket - the (most) affordable option

Do you have a Harrington in your closet? Let me know which one!

🀳🏼 Who I'm Following

@barber_j.rose

I really like this guy's style, especially his simple fits like this one.

It's so basic but so well executed, right up my alley.

He's a barber by trade, working out of Manchester in the UK, and I bet he gives one heck of a chop.

If I'm ever in that neck of the woods, I'm hitting him up!

Did you know? In the U.S., only licensed barbers are allowed to do straight razor shaves. Cosmetologists (a.k.a. hair stylists), despite thousands of hours of training, aren't allowed to wield these tiny face swords. So if you want that old school hot towel neck shave treatment, look for the spinning pole.

Until next time,

Brock
