French Fit Check, Not Using Soap & a Cartoonist To Follow

Plus, a centuries old waterproofing technique

by Brock McGoff

Hello again! I hope your week is going well so far.

In today's email:

  • A (kinda) French fit check
  • Men who don't use soap
  • The menswear cartoonist you should follow
  • How waxed canvas works

Let's dive in πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French Fit Check

If you saw my latest fit check, you may have noticed this bag (for transparency, the sample was gifted):

It's the Musette Business Bag from Blue de Chauffe, an artisanal French workshop making heritage quality bags the old fashioned way.

The brand makes some clothing too, but their main focus is bags and accessories.

This one is a modern take on the musette, a simple catch all bag used by military couriers, fisherman and photo journalists.

It's built like a tank from 18oz dry waxed British canvas. So it's water resistant but doesn't have that greasy feel.

The format is simple, which I like. There's room for your laptop and other EDC essentials, plus front pockets for bulky charging bricks and cables.

It's handsome too. And the metal push button clasp is incredibly satisfying to use.

This isn't a cheap bag, so you'd really have to make sure the size and format is right for you (or consider one of the brand's other bags).

But this is very much a buy-it-for-life accessory. Expensive, but not overpriced.

Also, if you're wondering, the watch is a 36mm meca quartz chronograph from French microbrand Depancel.

This steel sports watch has an integrated bracelet and can be used as a pulsometer or tachymeter.

It's a cool watch, especially if you're into racing culture and and a somewhat retro aesthetic.

🧼 Is Soap Overrated?

According to this Esquire article, lots of guys (and gals) simply don't use soap.

Like, they don't apply body wash in the shower. They don't use cleanser on their face. Some even skip the shampoo.

You might say they're letting the water do the heavy lifting.

Now, I don't always use shampoo (maybe every other shower), and I don't think it's the end of the world if I've run out of body wash.

But to permanently stop using soap? Even after a workout?

Idk man...

But I'm definitely intrigued.

What say you?

πŸ’ Food for Thought

It’s never been a better time to be exceptional, or a worse time to be average.

🀳🏼 Who I'm Following

@dick.carroll

At the weird, niche intersection of menswear, culture and cartoons, you'll find Dick Carroll, a Queens based illustrator that's "totally for hire".

He makes these funny little comics about dad fits and the Philly Tuxedo and hating summer.

The themes are a bit goofy and whimsical, the aesthetic sort of retro.

I don't even get half of his takes, but I enjoy the vibe!

Did you know? Using beeswax or paraffin to waterproof a jacket or bag is a centuries old practice that many brands (and customers) still prefer over synthetic weatherproofing. Wax fills the gaps between canvas or twill fibers, creating a water-resistant barrier. Simple but effective!

Until next time,

Brock
