Early Fall Layers & The Guy Who Quit His Job to Make Boots

Plus, three hand-picked articles for your reading list

by Brock McGoff

Hello again! I hope your week is going well so far.

In today's email:

  • A preppy-ish early fall fit
  • Guy who quit his job to make boots
  • Three good reads
  • How the Datejust got its name

Let's dive in πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ‚ Early Fall Layers

The temp dipped below 80 degrees the other day.

I dropped everything and grabbed a lightweight vest (it's kept behind emergency glass like a fire alarm).

This vest is actually from a secondhand shop up the street. I usually shy away from obvious branding, but there's something charming about a tiny Polo logo.

The shoes are from Crown Northampton. I've had them for years but never really broke them in. Maybe this is the season?

The jeans are A&F 90s Straight Jeans (video fit check here), and the OCBD is made-to-measure from Tailor Store.

The hair is inherited, just like the watch: an old Citizen quartz "Tank" from the mid-80s (a hand-me-down from my dad).

(I'll publish an updated watch collection video on November 4th.)

The sunglasses are Ray-Ban Franks, and the bag is the GRAMS28 302 Adventure Sling.

Not gonna lie: Oxford shirts and denim feel a bit stiff after wearing shorts and t-shirts all summer, but it's still nice to put together an actual fit.

You know, with layers, and...pants and stuff.

Anyway, here's to the best season for getting dressed 🍻

πŸ₯Ύ "I quit my job to make boots."

My buddy Nick (a.k.a., Stridewise) interviewed David Corey, a man who quit his job and moved to rural Pennsylvania to become a boot maker.

This is the kind of life 180 that most people fantasize about but never do.

So it's inspiring to hear from someone who actually acted on his dream. He also seems like a really nice guy, and the boots look incredible.

🀳🏼 Who I'm Following

@geo.hagg

To me, Geoff's feed is the epitome of old school cool, as if the photos were shot on film decades ago.

Well-versed in thrifting and Japanese menswear (a strong combo), Haggray is a model and photographer based in NYC.

Whether you need some fresh #fitspo or just a dose of warm retro ivy vibes, I think Geoff is worth a follow.

Did you know? Ralph Lauren never actually played polo. When he launched the brand in 1967, he chose the polo player logo because it represented the Ivy League, country club lifestyle he admired. Decades later, the symbol still carries a sense of aspiration and refinement.

Until next time,

Brock
