A Tiny Flashlight, Rugged Fall Shirts & Hand-Picked Deals

Plus, my favorite menswear look book right now

by Brock McGoff

Hello again! I hope your week is going well so far.

In today's email:

  • A tiny flashlight
  • The fall shirt I'm hunting for
  • Hand-picked Prime Day deals
  • One lookbook I'm loving right now

Let's dive in πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ”¦ Recent Pickup

Flashlights have come a long way since the days of those old Everyready's that took two D batteries and could double as bludgeons.

Look at this little RovyVon A8, for example.

It's small enough for everyday carry, either clipped in your pocket (or on your waistband), or on your keychain.

It's an easy choice for your laptop for EDC bag. You could keep one on your nightstand in case the power goes out.

It has a bunch of different modes, including a dim "lamp" mode in red/blue/soft white – similar to the lowest flashlight setting on your phone, but less directional (great for midnight diaper changes).

You could clip it to your cap when you go camping, or to your shorts during an even run. Or use the red flashing mode for bike rides.

Or, if you're 3, you can use it to make your Halloween PJ's extra glowy.

The A8 is just a thoughtfully designed, surprisingly powerful, rechargeable little flashlight.

It ain't cheap for such a small light, but RovyVon is well-loved by EDC and flashlight nerds, so it's not a risky purchase.

It's sometimes on sale via Amazon.

πŸ’ Food for Thought

Social media makes more sense when you view it as a place people go to perform rather than a place to communicate.

πŸ‘• The Rugby Shirt

I've been searching for neo-vintage rugby shirts on eBay recently, and this GQ article about the iconic style only made me want one more.

(If you open that link in mobile, you should be able to see the full article without a GQ subscription.)

I've always loved a long sleeve polo.

The rugby shirt is sort of the most casual, rugged version of it.

In high school, I had a red and gold rugby shirt from American Eagle that was probably 4" too long on my then 5'2" frame, but I loved it.

But there are so many options now, from vintage L.L.Bean and Ralph Lauren to modern takes from A&F, Land's End, J.Crew Factory and Rowing Blazers.

I'm still on the hunt and will let you know if I find a good one!

🀳🏼 Who I'm Following

@thisguykirk

Last week, I featured menswear brand Todd Snyder in this section, with a special callout to Kirk Robert Chambers, a fashion photographer who partnered with the brand on a recent look book.

Kirk's own personal look book is even better!

It's not that I'd wear these exact outfits. But his enthusiasm (and talent) is contagious.

It makes me want to get dressed again.

πŸ›οΈ Prime Day Deals

Here are a few hand-picked deals available right now:

A gentle reminder: please don't buy stuff just because it's on sale.

Yes, some of these are legitimately good deals. But if you don't need it, don't buy it.

Did you know? Rugby shirts were built to make the game more fair. The thick cotton fabric and reinforced collar made them hard to grab during tackles, preventing cheating. The bold horizontal stripes were added later to help teammates spot each other in the scrum.

Until next time,

Brock
